New Construction Post Tension Cable Locate, Residential
Ground Penetrating Radar used to locate post tension cable and conduit in a residential home in Phoenix, Arizona.
Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. of Phoenix, AZ was contacted by a local residential general contractor to locate post tension reinforcement and conduit in a concrete slab for a residential renovation in Phoenix, AZ.
The contractor had the task of relocating a drain that was situated within a wall. This required the wall and drain to be moved over 12" and cutting through the post tension concrete floor. It was necessary to scan the floor with ground penetrating radar technology to ensure that the locations of all post tension cables were known. Post tension cable is often tightened to 20,000 psi or greater in residential settings and is extremely expensive to repair as well as extremely dangerous if cut, due to high tension.
GPRS, Inc. arrived on site to provide immediate, real-time, digital concrete imaging (Ground Penetrating Radar) and illustrate on site, the clear locations of all post tension cables. This allowed for the contractor to safely understand the location of all post tension cables within the slab, giving an extremely clear visual to safely renovate without damaging post tension cable. All cables within the area were located, ensuring that the demolition and drain relocation plan would be completed safely.
Ground Penetrating Radar was ideal on this site as it in a residential community with nearby residences and other personnel working onsite. GPR does not require evacuation of the area as does traditional x-ray concrete imaging. GPR emits no radiation and is completely safe to be around. Traditional x-ray is mostly done after hours whereas GPR can be done during normal business hours. All data findings are marked directly on the surface at the customer’s request for the easiest interpretation of the scanning provided. With GPR, there is no wait for developing film as with traditional x-ray. Only one side of the slab is needed for scanning, thus time and resources are efficiently save and ideal for tight project schedules. Ground Penetrating Radar is the new way to x-ray!

Ground penetrating Radar mapping is a great tool to scan areas of post tension cables, rebar, and conduits, including PVC pipes. Ground penetrating radar can also be used to locate underground utilities such as water, gas, electrical, communication, sewer, and other objects prior to digging or excavating.
