Locating Reinforcing Steel inside a Parking Garage on Walls at a Hospital - Mesa AZ
Prior to core drilling holes through walls in a parking garage, it’s imperative to know the location of the reinforcing steel. Most of the time the reinforcing steel can’t be cut due to the fact the structural integrity of the wall would be compromised.
A General Contractor had a project inside a parking garage in Mesa AZ where they had to core drill numerous holes to run new conduits. The conduits were being installed to provide additional cell service throughout the hospital. There had already been reinforcing steel cut by a prior contractor that didn’t have the walls scanned. They had to find out how much & the location of reinforcing steel embedded in the wall before making the decision to proceed with drilling additional holes. The General Contractor contacted GPRS of Arizona to perform a GPR investigation of numerous sections of walls to provide the reinforcing steel pattern. There were some tight areas that needed to be scanned so GPRS utilized the Structure Scan Mini to perform the investigation. GPRS was able to scan above & beside the existing utilities already passing through the locations. All findings were then marked directly on the surface in real time. It was determined by GPRS that the wall had a double mat of reinforcing steel stacked directly in the same plane but at different depths inside the wall. The technology & experience utilized by GPRS allowed them to scan from one side of the wall to determine the double mat of reinforcing steel present. This allowed the project Superintendent the ability to make a decision in a timely manner on whether to proceed or not with the core drilling process.
