The structural integrity of walls can be compromised if any reinforcing steel is cut during the installation of new electrical conduits. Having the information provided as to what the reinforcing layout is will help to allow the planning process of where the pipes could enter the wall. Real time results marked on the surface is usually the best avenue. That way there are no questions to the layout of the steel & the driller can see where to place the hole without compromising the structural integrity of the wall.

An electrical contractor had a project outside a business in Phoenix AZ where they needed to core drill multiple holes in a small area of a wall to run new electrical conduits to the transformer. Since it was a small area with numerous holes being drilled they couldn’t afford to cut through any reinforcing steel during the process. It was going to be tricky since the conduits had to be placed at a certain distance from one another. They had to find out how much & spacing of the reinforcing steel that was embedded in the wall before making the decision to proceed with drilling the holes. The electrical contractor contacted Ground Penetrating Radar Systems of Phoenix AZ to perform a GPR investigation of a section of the wall to provide the reinforcing steel pattern. GPRS was able to scan the area of the wall where the holes were going to be drilled to mark the reinforcing steel directly on the walls surface. The technology & experience utilized by GPRS allowed them to scan from one side of the wall to determine the rebar pattern. The information provided by GPRS was invaluable to keeping the project on schedule. It also helped in allowing the structural integrity of the wall to remain.
